Dr. Ruth McPherson, Director of the Lipid Clinic at the
University of Ottawa Heart Institute, wants to identify
the genes (pieces of DNA), which increase the risk
for developing "Metabolic syndrome". We would like
to identify the genes associated with high triglycerides and
other related diseases such as glucose intolerance, low good
cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity.
If you are slightly above ideal body weight but have no abnormal
blood fats or blood sugars, you may have a "protective gene" that
prevents the development of the Metabolic Syndrome.
GEMS is a worldwide study in which approximately 2000 people
will be participating from Europe, the USA and Canada. We have
already recruited 800 individuals from the Ottawa region with the
"metabolic syndrome".
